The Homeland Security student organization, HALT (Homeland Security and Assets Protection Leaders of Tomorrow) collaborated with SHINE, a human trafficking abolitionist group, to raise funds by selling cookies to raise money for fellow student veterans. SHINE, which stands for Stop Human Injustice Enslavement and Exploitation helped bake and provide some of the cookies that HALT sold at the Stratton building in March. The proceeds went to EKU VETS; a student organization created for veterans to help with the transition from combat to college and offer a place where vets can come together, share similar experiences and receive support.
HALT’s usual activities consist of social and professional development to help them with their careers but for the first time, they have stepped out of their comfort zone and became involved with other EKU student organizations, like SHINE and EKU VETS. More importantly, they haven’t lost focus of why they’re really in the Homeland Security program: to help others.
Naturally, there are a large number of student veterans in the College of Justice & Safety, especially the Homeland Security program. During the bake sale, which was only set up for one day, HALT gained a lot of attention by selling cookies for a quarter and giving past or current military personnel a free cookie, after all, the whole purpose was aimed showing veteran support.
HALT is looking forward to expanding and extending their reach to more student organizations within the College of Justice & Safety and even further, across campus. They feel good about helping others, especially those who have sacrificed so much for our country. HALT hopes that the money they raised for EKU VETS will inspire the club to do more activities to involve veterans and expand their organization.
